This is what you get for stopping a puck with the side of my leg. It’s getting darker and darker.

One last thing before bed. I took a slap shot off my hip (outer thigh?) in the last game. There isn’t any real padding there on hockey pants. It didn’t hurt a lot at the time, and it isn’t killing me now, but I can’t wait to see what the bruise looks like.

This is my hockey gear, spread out to dry.
And here is one of the many ways you can tell I am not a real hockey player. I spread out my gear before I cracked a beer. I blame exhaustion.
And, I’m blogging about this stuff, instead of just going to bed.

It’s 5:10 AM. I am finally back home. My back is sore, both arms hurt, and I did not want to take off my gear. We lost the last game, 10-3. It was amazing we got 3. We had not goalie at first, only four people from our team showed up, and we had to borrow a few players, taking the grand total up to seven. Seven.
Our record was 1-4, 28 goals for, 41 goals against.
Our Bakersfield Alumni took off after the first game, which I don’t blame them. They have to play at noon today. So we were a little short on the bench.
Would I do it again? Sure, but I think I will take a little more time to stretch. Like a year. I’m so sore.

We lost the 4th game 6-4, which isn’t awful for us. The goalie made some great glove saves, and I only made one bad turnover. For me, that’s a moral victory. And I will take it. One more game at 3:15 AM. Wish me luck.

We lost our 3rd game 10-8. I had some good plays (ie: lucky) and plenty of bad. At least I didn’t hurt anyone. Which can’t be said for everyone.

My back is less sore than I thought it would be. Either I stretched enough, or I wasn’t working hard enough out there. I think it was the stretching.

Alright, I’m up. I went to bed around 5:20AM, it is now 10:30 AM. I’m hoping to be awake only long enough for the Condors game at noon, then I’m back to sleep around 7:00 PM for my next two games. Three on tap tonight. 9:30 PM, 11:45 PM, and 3:15 AM. And I do not need reminding of why I am doing this.

I tried to post from the rink, but it didn’t work out. So here is your game report.
Game 1: 9-8 win in the shootout. I had very little to do with the outcome. In fact, on my first shift, I gave the puck away, which led to the first goal of the game. Against.
Game 2: 7-4 loss. We were in it for the first half, but all hell broke lose in the second.
Overall, I made a few good defensive plays, which is to say that a good thing happened, and I was involved. In other words, luck smiled down on me a few times. In one play, I backchecked hard to take the puck away from a guy, and I would like to think that this was my Barry Melrose “will vs. skill” moment.
I’m off to bed. It’s 5AM here, and there is a noon Condors game to go to.

I just counted the games, and I am now one third of the way though the trip. But the bulk of the driving is still to come. I am watching the very un-hockey movie, The Fifth Element, relaxing before the games. If you head to bed before I post anymore, you may wake up to some pics from the overnight games.

The wait time on food for the restaurant is an hour, possibly more. You do not want to see what this hotel is like right now. The building itself is nice, the hotel is nice, but it is overrun with a convention the likes of which you do not want to see. I will leave you with that. Instead of dining on pasta, I will be pizza carbo-loading.

I just can’t sleep. I’m too nervous / revved up for the games tonight. I have to relax a little. I guess this just gives me more time to stretch and shave (the stitches take better that way (ha!)). Looks like I was right about the alumni players, and they will be playing in the alumni game on Sunday afternoon, right before the Condors game. I hope they pace themselves.

Avs vs Caps is keeping me awake for the moment, but it really is time for a pregame nap. Remember, I am playing from 1-2 AM and 3:15-4:15 AM. This schedule won’t break me, since I am a late night person, but it will bend me.
This is the view from my hotel room. On the left is the rink of doom, on the right is Rabobank Arena, where the Condors play. At least I am close.

I’m checked into my hotel room. Ready to take a nap before the big game starts. I must say, I’m pretty nervous. This guy is on our team:
Paul Willett

And with the latest roster update, familiar name popped up:
Wayne Gretzky
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=2035
I wish I could make that up.
This guy may be one of our goalies:

And I think this guy:

Yeah, I think I’m going to get my ass handed to me. This is going to be fun.

I missed the stick time at the rink in Oxnard (dumb name for a town (no, I’m not bitter)), so I’m moving on to Bakersfield.

My schedule for the hockey tourney:
Sat 1:00 AM – 2:00 AM
Sat 3:15 AM – 4:15 AM
Sun 9:30 PM – 10:30 PM
Sun 11:45 PM – 12:45 AM
Sun 3:15 AM -4:15 AMI am hoping to subscribe to the old Barry Melrose nhl2night theory of “will versus skill.” I have the will. Perhaps that’s what killed the Lightning, too much skill in that equation. Hmmm….

A beautiful sunny morning here in San Luis Obispo. I’m trying to decide what my schedule should be for the next two days, since I have my hockey game schedule for the tournament, and four of the five games are played after midnight. I’m going to be in some pain.

That’s it, I’m done for the night. Checked into the hotel around 8:30, and was teased by the prospect of seeing the Ducks/Kings game in my hotel room. It was not to be. A good drive today, and I got my schedule for the Bakersfield charity hockey games. Late night hockey. I’m going to be exhausted.
